Who We Represent
We are a diverse community of families, friends and businesses located in the heart of South Los Angeles. Centrally located we are just south of Downtown Los Angeles and adjacent to some of Los Angeles' world renowned cultural, science and education institutions including: The Natural History Museum, The California Science Center, the California African American Museum (CAAM) the Rose Garden, BMO Stadium, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, The University of Southern California and the soon to be completed Lucas Museum of Narrative Arts.
We are home to the Vermont Square Library, Los Angeles oldest Branch Library built in 1913. The library is designated a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument and graciously hosts our monthly neighborhood council meetings.
We are also home to Manual Arts High School, the oldest highest school in Los Angeles still at its original location. At the time of it's construction in 1910 the surrounding area was not the dense urban environment is today, but rural bean fields.
Many of the homes in our historic neighborhood were first built in the roaring 1920s and were serviced by the long defunct Los Angeles Yellow Car Railway which connected our then new community to downtown Los Angeles and the larger Los Angeles area.
The Vermont Square Community Garden is built on the former right-of-way of the Yellow Car located on either side of Vermont Ave. If you look closely you can still see a pole which once held the power lines for the local rail cars.

Rail to Rail Active Transportation Corridor by Metro
Our community is also celebrating the opening of the Rail to Rail Active Transportation Corridor by Metro, a multi-use path that now connects neighborhoods from Inglewood to South LA. This new greenway brings safe opportunities for walking, biking, and recreation, while linking our community to the broader region.

Slauson Connect Recreation and Education Center
Looking forward, exciting projects are underway. The Slauson Connect Recreation and Education Center along Slauson Avenue will provide local youth with opportunities in digital media arts, including broadcasting and game design. This state-of-the-art hub will feature pedestrian and bike pathways, a green screen studio, a multipurpose editing and gaming lab, a daycare center, afterschool programs, a vegetative roof terrace, and more.

Sen. Bill Greene Memorial Park
In addition, the Sen. Bill Greene Memorial Park, developed in partnership with LADWP, is transforming a vacant lot at Figueroa and Slauson that sat empty for over 40 years. This new park will include an amphitheater, outdoor fitness space, tree canopy, and other features designed to bring fresh energy and gathering space to our community.

Uplifting the Community
Voices NC is proud to uplift the history and resilience of South LA while working toward a stronger future. From cultural landmarks and green spaces to innovative community projects, our goal is to ensure that residents, families, and youth continue to thrive here at the heart of Los Angeles.
