Toss it Up Salad Bar

Voices NC would like to highlight a member of our community.  Please meet Javonne Sanders.

Javonne was born and raised in Los Angeles California, where she resided in the Crenshaw Community and graduated from Crenshaw High School and then later earned her Bachelor’s degree from Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, CA. She worked in several professional fields which developed her leadership skills as well as the importance of management. During this journey, there were various ups and downs in her personal life with weight loss, which caused personal insecurities, depression, and not connecting with others. This has been a huge struggle for her since she was a young adolescent, and it carried on into adulthood. She was tired of it and needed a change.

Javonne realized a healthy eating lifestyle was extremely difficult, and this was not just affecting her, it was affecting the community. This problem was bigger than her. She decided to step out her comfort zone and take a huge leap into entrepreneurship and became a business owner, but in what?

After pondering for a short period of time, Javonne asked herself aloud, “what was the reason behind this salad bar”?  Influenced by a commercial on a local radio station which mentioned that “there was a huge epidemic of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes that’s effecting the community”, the idea of the Salad Bar Café was born. But what to name it? Soon after, a popular song by Tupac Shakur- “Toss It Up” played and in the first verse it states “Lord Have Mercy, Father helps us all – Since you supplied your phone number, I can’t help but call”. That verse was a sign to Javonne that an affordable salad bar was needed, and she now had a name for it.

Now you can find Javonne at the Sundays Popup, ‘Saladbowl Sundays’ at 2413 W Martin Luther King Blvd Los Angeles, CA from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. She offers a variety of premade salads for the community.
